How to Fit a 3M 6000 Series Half Face Mask
March 17, 2022
Prior to fitting the mask, the face should be clean shaven where the seal of mask fits, long hair be tied back and jewellery removed. The 6000 series masks should not be worn with facial hair as this will interfere with the seal of the mask.
Remove the mask from the box and inspect for signs of damage or wear.
Fit the appropriate filters or filter combination. Always replace filters as a pair. Check expiration date of filters before fitting and check the orange gaskets on the mask are in place. Line up the lugs and quarter turn clockwise to fit.
To don the mask loosen the straps and place the respirator over the mouth and nose. Once in place pull the harness over the crown of the head. Take the bottom straps in both hands, place them at the back of the neck and carefully hook them together. Slowly tighten the straps starting with the top straps. The mask should feel snug but take care not to overtighten. Seal of the mask should be checked before entering the workplace if gas and vapour filters have been fitted.
A positive pressure check is performed by placing the palm of the hand over the opening in the exhalation valve cover and exhaling gently. If the facepiece bulges slightly and no air leaks between the face and the facepiece are detected, a proper fit has been achieved. If air leakage is detected, reposition the respirator on the face and/or readjust the elastic straps to eliminate the leakage. Repeat the face fit check.
If using the 3M 6035, 6038 or 2000 series filters a negative pressure face fit check is recommended. Press your thumb into the central indentation of the 2000 series filter. When using the 6035 or 6038 filter pinch the filter between your thumb and finger to seal the filter cover to the filter body. Inhale gently and hold you breathe for 5 to 10 seconds. If the facepiece collapses slightly a proper fit has been achieved. If air leakage is detected, reposition the respirator on the face and/or readjust the elastic straps to eliminate the leakage. Repeat the face fit check.
A poster demonstrating correct fitting is available here (3m 6000 Fitting Poster).
An instruction video is also available here demonstrating donning and pressure face fit checks.
